Project Overview

Nestled on the banks of the Humber Estuary, The Deep serves as a serene hub of marine conservation and education. Since opening in 2002, this iconic aquarium in Hull has attracted over 440,000 visitors annually with its extensive marine life exhibits. Understanding the critical need for comprehensive fire safety and security to protect both the inhabitants and visitors, The Deep entrusts Chubb Fire & Security with this vital responsibility.

Customer Needs

Since its inception, The Deep has relied on Chubb to ensure the safety of its complex. The site comprises the main aquarium, a coral storage warehouse (Unit C), and an archive storage facility. Given the high visitor turnover and the value of the marine life housed within, robust fire safety and security measures are paramount.

Fire Safety Solutions

Chubb has been instrumental in advancing The Deep’s fire safety systems. When existing fire panels became outdated, Chubb upgraded the system twice, ensuring comprehensive coverage (L1 system) throughout the facility.

Challenges & Incidents

When The Deep hosted the Third Round of the FA Cup draw in December 2014, Chubb demonstrated exceptional adaptability by temporarily modifying the fire alarm system. This quick adjustment prevented disruptions during the live broadcast, underscoring Chubb’s commitment to customised customer service.

Chubb’s efficiency is crucial in supporting The Deep during its regular fire drills, ensuring that all systems operate flawlessly when it matters most. The prompt activation of fire alarms and the PAVA system during these drills facilitates a safe and orderly rehearsal of evacuation procedures, demonstrating the effectiveness of the systems and the readiness of Chubb’s engineers to provide immediate support.

Security Solutions

In response to the unique security needs of The Deep, Chubb installed a comprehensive array of security measures, including intruder alarms, CCTV, and access control systems, with around 50 cameras monitoring both inside and around the perimeter.

The 2023 upgrade of these systems highlights Chubb’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance security.

Unique Challenge

The Deep’s proximity to maritime activity occasionally presents unique challenges, such as radar interference from passing ships affecting the radio links of security systems. Chubb’s proactive approach includes ongoing adjustments and technological enhancements to mitigate such issues.

Ongoing Commitment

Chubb’s commitment to The Deep extends beyond installations and upgrades. With bi-annual security system servicing and quarterly fire alarm checks performed out of hours, Chubb ensures minimal disruption to The Deep’s operations and provides 24/7 access to engineering support.

“Chubb’s dedication to maintaining robust fire safety and security systems at The Deep has been paramount in allowing us to offer a safe, educational environment for our visitors and a secure habitat for our marine life. Their proactive service and technology upgrades have been crucial in addressing the unique challenges presented by our location and visitor volume.” Jason Bache, Facilities Manager, The Deep.
